August is considered the peak of the Green Season — with the whole island covered in lush vegetation, it’s easy to see how it earned its name.

Thanks to the frequent rain and cloud cover, temperatures and humidity are more manageable — and after heavy rainfall, it can even feel a bit chilly.

The wind, coming from the west to southwest, can be strong and often brings heavy storms.

Usually, after a storm, it continues to rain or stay cloudy for a few days. This is then followed by some sunny days with blue skies and only occasional rain during the night. These days can feel like high season — before the next storm rolls in.
Rain showers in August are usually moderately strong but often last for several hours.

After heavy rainfall, waterfalls are overflowing. By now, they’re close to — if not at — their peak power and may be difficult to access on some days. Yet they are definitely worth a visit.

Low tide usually comes in the early morning, while high tide arrives in the evening or at night. Beaches are wide and spacious during the day. Strong winds bring high waves, which are great for trying your first surf lesson — but sometimes too rough to enter the water at all.
Beware of rip currents, which can occur on some beaches.

And as you probably know: after the storm comes the calm. You can expect a few days with pleasant, calm conditions — sometimes even good enough for a bit of snorkeling.

August weather follows a fairly steady rhythm: heavy storm, then rain, then sunshine — and repeat.
